Building Positive Change in Health Care: The Inspiring Role of Accreditation
By dr. Friedrich Max Rumintjap, Sp.OG(K), MARS, FISQua, FIHFAA, FRSPH

In the light of an unfailing view, healthcare has always been a bright star on the map of our lives. However, in the midst of an unexpected storm like the COVID-19 pandemic, sometimes that light seems dim. However, like lightning that strikes the dark sky, sometimes we need a strong push to restore the clarity and sharpness of that light. This is the role that healthcare accreditation plays: as a lightning that illuminates the path to positive change in the healthcare system.
When we talk about accreditation in the context of healthcare, we seem to enter a labyrinth full of surprises and hopes. Accreditation is not just an ordinary assessment; it is a gateway to a profound transformation in the way we deliver healthcare. In a study conducted by Carrasco-Peralta et al. (2019), it was found that healthcare accreditation is not just an evaluation tool, but also a key driver of sustainable organizational change.
Healthcare professionals involved in the accreditation process witnessed significant changes in various aspects. From an increased focus on patient-centered care to an improved culture of safety, accreditation brings a breath of fresh air that brightens the steps towards better quality care. However, it is undeniable that there are also challenges faced, such as excessive bureaucratization and binding standardization. However, as the saying goes, every medal has a different side.
In tracing the trail of changes brought about by accreditation, we not only witness the evolution of the health system, but also an inspiring journey of the soul. The accreditation process is a reflection of the commitment and dedication of health professionals to provide the best for the community. It is a reflection of the tireless fighting spirit to achieve unwavering quality of service.
However, in an honest flashback, we also see the shadow of darkness that lurks behind the bright light of accreditation. Excessive bureaucratization and binding standardization are obstacles that must be overcome. However, like sailors sailing through stormy seas, we must remain steadfast in our determination to achieve the goals we dream of.
As part of this journey, the Indonesian Health Facility Accreditation Institute (LAFKI) has a very important role. As a guardian of quality and patient safety, LAFKI is tasked with ensuring that every step taken in the accreditation process brings optimal benefits to the community. By considering the findings of various studies and reflections on real experiences, LAFKI can be the vanguard in strengthening and improving the accreditation system in Indonesia.
Through a holistic and empowerment-oriented approach, LAFKI can provide comprehensive guidance to health facilities in undergoing the accreditation process. This includes not only technical aspects, but also cultural and philosophical aspects that underlie the principles of accreditation. Thus, LAFKI can be an inspiring agent of change, bringing a ray of hope for the progress of the health system in Indonesia.
In the long journey towards positive change in health services, accreditation is just the beginning of an amazing adventure. With determination and burning passion, we can overcome every obstacle and reach a high peak. In the darkness of the night, we will find a light that guides our steps, bringing hope that never fades.
As we have learned from the accreditation experience, change is not an easy process, but it is a very important process. By continuing to move forward, with courage and perseverance, we can shape a better future for our health system. And in the midst of our struggles, LAFKI will stand firm as the guardian of the burning fire, bringing rays of hope to our every step.
By holding each other's hands, we can move forward through every storm that comes our way, towards a bright and hopeful horizon. LAFKI GREETINGS.
